by Alfred Wong

Lento - Adagio sostenuto - Con moto - Largo - Lento - Tempo Rubato - Allargando

The Night Poem for cello and piano is one of the Night Poem series. This piece was premièred in the Contemporary Music Exchange Concert jointly held by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Tokyo National University of Arts and Music in 2001, with renowned cellist Wolfgang Nüβlein and CUHK artist-in-residence Dr. Mary Wu playing.

Mr. Wong was immersed in the music of Isang Yun and Claude Debussy in the time of composing. The composer tried to explore the virtuosic techniques of cello, yet in the regime of tonality. The performance was received with great success and it was among the works that the composer feels satisfied with.

Although it is entitled Night Poem, it is not totally calm and peaceful, nor is it related to the poems by Li Tai Po. Perhaps it is more rhapsodic than the name might suggest.
